Year 6 Explore Fairtrade and Local Shopping

30th Mar 2026
Year 6 have been very busy learning about their World Around Us topic, “Is It Fair?” They explored Fairtrade and looked at how shops and shopping habits have changed over time and then related this to their local area.

The pupils visited the Fairhill Centre in Ballymena, where they met several local business owners. They spoke with the owner of the new shop Ben’s Ice Cream, and they also met the owner of McKillen’s, who explained why their shop decided to close. The manager of Marks and Spencer talked to the children about the benefits of buying Fairtrade products and showed them where these items can be found in the store.

The pupils also enjoyed a trip to Ballymena Library, where they used maps to compare shops in Ballymena today with shops from the past. This helped them to understand the changes over time.
