Tasty Instruction Writing in Primary 2
Primary 2 have had an exciting start to their new writing focus as they began learning all about instructions. To help them understand what clear, step‑by‑step instructions look like in real life, the pupils took part in some practical activities, making delicious jam sandwiches and crafting chocolate Easter nests.
The children quickly discovered that giving instructions isn’t as easy as it seems! Working in pairs, they practised using bossy verbs, ordering steps carefully, and thinking about what information a reader would need. Making Easter nests was another highlight. Pupils followed each step closely as they melted chocolate, mixed in cereal, and shaped their nests before topping them with colourful mini eggs. The hands‑on element helped them recognise just how helpful well‑written instructions can be.
After completing both activities, they moved on to organising their own sets of instructions. Sequencing the steps in the correct order, using time connectives such as first, next, and finally and including lists of materials and ingredients.
