Exploring the Democracy Equation: How Maths Powers Fairness in Year 5!

19th Oct 2023

Today, David Hume, Civic Events Co-ordinator from the ‘Council Democratic Services’ department paid a visit to the Year 5 pupils and made a fascinating connection between maths and democracy. He used a real-life example of an author election to illustrate how maths plays a crucial role in vital aspects of democracy, including managing budgets and organising elections for schools and students.

He explained that when we vote in a democracy, maths is the tool that ensures we count all the votes accurately. David also emphasised the fundamental principle of democracy where everyone's voice should be equal, regardless of where they come from. Maths helps us establish rules to guarantee that every person's vote carries the same weight.

He highlighted the essence of democracy as a collective effort to solve problems and make decisions. Maths, he pointed out, teaches us problem-solving, just like finding the solution to a challenging puzzle.

The Year 5 pupils had an amazing time and want to thank David for the engaging and enlightening discussion.
