Connecting the Dots: How Year 4 Explored Maths in the World of Hairdressing.

18th Oct 2023

Linda Gillen, the owner of "The Hair and Beauty Spot," paid a visit to the Year 4 pupils today shedding light on how she uses maths practically in her daily job. Linda emphasised that precision in measurements and calculations is vital in her job as a hairdresser, particularly when it comes to ensuring hair is cut to the desired length.

In her role as a hair colourist, Linda revealed how maths plays an important role when mixing hair dyes and chemicals. She highlighted the importance of determining the precise ratios of colourants and developers to attain the desired shade. Linda also discussed the art of time management, a skill that she employs rigorously. Managing her appointments throughout the day requires careful calculation to determine the time allocated for each client.  As a salon owner, Linda constantly applies maths to manage her stock, ensuring supplies are replaced in a timely manner.

Year 4 gained a lot of knowledge from Linda's visit, truly bringing the concept of "Maths Week" to life. They are excited to make use of their ‘Hair and Beauty Spot’ pencils to help them solve their daily maths problems. A heartfelt thank you to Linda for her engaging and informative presentation.
